Introduction and Objectives

The next major development in the cogeneration market will be the commercialisation of micro-cogeneration systems (app. 20 kWe and smaller). This small-scale cogeneration trend is largely due to the emergence of very small gas engines, stirling engines and fuel cells. Their target markets will include individual houses, small groups of houses, small hotels and retail establishments. The potential for this technology is vast. Some important questions need to be resolved if this technology is to reach the market and fulfil its potential. This Working Group aims to

  • create awareness of micro-CHP as an ecologically and economically efficient technology, and actively develop the market for micro-CHP;
  • assess environmental aspects of micro-CHP and its contribution to sustainable development;
  • provide a forum to present and evaluate new micro-CHP technologies, including fuel cells, Stirling engines, Rankine cycle engines and non-gas applications
  • exchange knowledge and experiences with micro-CHP applications in individual countries and regions;
  • monitor regulatory developments relevant to micro-CHP at EU and Member State levels;
  • work on the electrical grid interface requirements and technologies for micro-CHP units;
  • develop lobbying positions of COGEN Europe.
