Description:

CHAPNET concerned the creation and operation of a Thematic Network on Combined Heat & Power within the EU's 5th Research Framework Programme. CHAPNET contributed to the dissemination and exploitation of RTD results and a successful development of a RTD strategy for CHP thus providing input into the European Research Area. The primary objective of the Thematic Network was to build a critical mass of RTD knowledge, expertise and strategic direction on CHP in Europe with a vision of 20 years. This objective is consistent with the long-term development of CHP technologies to meet EU targets for growth and to deliver substantial benefits in terms of greenhouse gas reductions, EU competitiveness and sustainable development.

The Thematic Network was divided into three cross-cutting work packages providing inputs into 6 key clusters. The Clusters brought together medium andlong-term RTD activities in the field of CHP and formed collaborative links with other networks that were ongoing or planned for gas turbines, fuel cells and integration of distributed generation in electricity networks.

In each case the cluster focused co-ordinated information exchange, strategic discussions about progress in RTD, future RTD needs and strategies for exploitation and dissemination. The scope of each cluster will focus on state of the art technology, drawing upon activities at the EU level, in the Member States, in the Accession Countries and by individual companies and research centres. The concept of the clusters was to maximise the benefits of exchange of knowledge and experience between research teams in the field of CHP. In each cluster was a number of common themes strategy development, mapping centres of excellence, collaboration between EU and National RTD Projects and addressing the needs of CHP in Accession Countries.
