Description:

On a strategic level, the objective of Micromap was to provide a reference framework to policy makers in the EU and national governments to stimulate the growth of micro and mini cogeneration and maximise the benefits of these environmentally, socially and commercially advantageous technologies. Micromap produced a study and development plan for mini and micro CHP, demonstrating its enormous potential in energy and CO2 savings.

Phase 1 reviewed the current products available including mini CHP engines and turbines, Stirling engines, fuel cells, controls, and heat storage and examine grid connection issues.
Phase 2 examined the potential market and its size and produce a specific database of housing and small non-domestic buildings in the EU and Central and Eastern Europe. As well as a full breakdown by age, type, heating demand, etc., this included new-build, refurbishment and boiler replacement rates and access to natural gas supply.
The external influences on the development of the market were analysed in Phase 3, covering fuel supply and cost, market liberalisation and the institutional and legislative framework.
Phase 4 reviewed the market mechanisms and delivery options for the new technologies, and drew on previous, similar market transformation processes.
In Phase 5, the previous phases were brought together to forecast the market penetration under different scenarios. Energy and CO2 emissions savings were calculated together with the value of the market.
Phase 6 developed the market development plan and made recommendations in all areas, including products and costs, finance arrangements, legislation and regulation, installation and service networks, and promotion. Initial niche markets were proposed together with the necessary support.
Phase 7 was the dissemination phase which in practice started half way through the project with a series of seminars. Dissemination materials include a Full Report, a widely distributed Summary Report and web site details.
