Description: Polygeneration is the use of multiple energy sources to cover multiple energy needs. Applications of Polygeneration in the food industry can provide significant energy cost savings, security of supply and environmental benefits. Cogeneration and trigeneration are more specific cases of Polygeneration. The project aims at developing necessary information for extensive application of polygeneration projects in the food industry. This is the most promising sector for polygeneration applications, since there are usually more than one sources of primary energy available while heating and cooling demand usually coexist. Polygeneration applications in the food industry is nowadays limited. Diversity of processes, thermal needs, resources availability, etc make development of polygeneration projects there highly unpredictable and thus not attractive. There are no classified references available to interested stakeholders. A thorough investigation of the polygeneration potential in the food industry all around Europe together with success stories will provide all appropriate installation/investment guidelines and will provide information on existing technology gaps. Extensive dissemination of such information is expected to mobilise the food industry market towards investment on polygeneration. Indirect benefits other than savings in primary energy consumption, will be the rational use and disposal of food industry by-products, having an impact on the environment and public health.
