| Description: |
The
objective of the Prosmaco project is to promote small-scale
cogeneration in rural areas across Europe, notably by carrying
out 6 pilot actions. Prosmaco investigated engine and micro-turbine
cogeneration schemes with a capacity under 1 MWe and was delivered
in four phases:
- Phase
1: Market Analysis for Small-Scale Cogeneration (SSC)
- Phase
2: Methodology and Tool to Analyse the Impact of SSC on the
electrical system
- Phase
3: Pilot Actions introducing SSC
- Phase
4:Promotion and Dissemination of the Prosmaco Project
The
project identifed the following potential users of small-scale
cogeneration in rural areas: Pig farms, greenhouses, Saw mills,
hotels and resorts, hospitals, swimming pools, SMEs, military
barracks, training schools, and sewage treatment plants. The
following 6 pilot actions were carried out: Landfill (Greece),
sewage treatment plant (Poland), saw mill (Spain), mountain
hut (France), technical school (France-Reunion), and hotel (Austria).
For all pilot actions and potential users in rural areas, the
tool COGENEVE has been developed to analyse the impact of SSC
on the grid. Divided in two modules, this software quantifies
how SSC can reduce voltage drops and avoid expensive reinforcement
of the Low Voltage network.
Prosmaco concluded that there is a significant market amongst
these user groups. Small-scale cogeneration offers new opportunities
for rural development, has beneficial effects on the electrical
system in rural areas, reduces the environmental impact of energy
production, and supports all main objectives of EU energy policies.
Yet, obstacles and barriers hamper its uptake and prevent the
use of third party financing schemes to develop the exisiting
market potential.
Prosmaco was co-ordinated by Inestene, which was in charge for
the execution of all technical and administrative tasks, and
the technical and commercial controlling of the project.
